What is a light bulb and what types are there?

A light bulb is an electric device that produces light when an electric current passes through it. It is commonly used for illumination in homes, offices, and outdoor spaces.

Types of Light Bulbs

  1. Incandescent Bulbs

    • Traditional bulbs with a filament that glows when heated.

    • Short lifespan (around 1,000 hours).

    • Inefficient, as most energy is wasted as heat.

  2. Halogen Bulbs

    • A type of incandescent bulb but with halogen gas inside to increase efficiency.

    • Brighter and longer-lasting than regular incandescent bulbs.

    • Produces a lot of heat.

  3. Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs)

    • Use a small amount of mercury vapor that emits UV light when excited by electricity.

    • Energy-efficient (uses about 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs).

    • Longer lifespan (8,000–15,000 hours).

    • Takes time to reach full brightness.

  4. Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs)

    • Use semiconductors to emit light when an electric current passes through.

    • Extremely energy-efficient (uses up to 90% less energy than incandescent bulbs).

    • Long lifespan (25,000–50,000 hours).

    • Available in various colors and dimmable options.

  5. Fluorescent Tubes

    • Similar to CFLs but in tube form.

    • Used in offices, warehouses, and commercial spaces.

    • Highly efficient but requires a ballast to operate.

  6. Smart Bulbs

    • LED-based bulbs that can be controlled via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

    • Can change colors, dim, and be scheduled using a smartphone or voice assistant.

  7. HID (High-Intensity Discharge) Bulbs

    • Includes metal halide, mercury vapor, and sodium vapor bulbs.

    • Extremely bright and used in street lighting, stadiums, and industrial spaces.

    • Long lifespan but requires a warm-up time.
